Fake Cake

by Michelle
(Milwaukee, WI)

My best friend's wedding was last summer, and her solution to the cake expense was, in my opinion, quite brilliant.

Out for display at the reception were two gorgeous cakes- the bride's and the groom's. What the average reception goer did not realize, however, was that these cakes were fake-- simple styrofoam cake-shaped boxes covered beautifully with frosting and petals.

She simply cut out a slice of styrofoam, replaced it with a slice of cake, and marked it with a petal so that she could do the cake cutting in front of everyone.

In the back room were several inexpensive sheet cakes from Sam's Club, so when the gorgeous fake cakes were wheeled back to be "cut," an easy swap was made, the sheet cake slices were wheeled out, and no one was the wiser!

Hundreds of dollars were saved this way!

There's a catch to this idea
by: Anonymous

Using fake cakes will only save you money if you decorate them yourself or someone you know does it for you. If you order fake cake tiers, or "dummy" cakes as baker's call them, from an actual bakery you will not save much if any money.

Most of the time spent to make a wedding cake is spend decorating it so most cake decorators will only discount the dummy cakes about 20% if they will discount them at all. Also, some bakeries will not allow you to use a dummy cake they decorated and then serve sheet cakes from a grocery store, because if you tell people the cakes were done by X bakery and they eat cake from a grocery store they will think the grocery store cakes are what the bakery made, which usually are not near the quality of a bakery. So don't expect to save a bunch of money if you are expecting a bakery to decorate the fake cakes.

But if you or someone you know has the skills to decorate the cakes it's a great idea because they can be done in advance so that's one less thing you have to worry about last minute.

Frosting a cake...
by: Cait

If you have a local craft store near you and are confident with your abilities I would recommend taking a cake decorating course from Wilton.

Less than $75 with costs, etc. and then you can frost like a pro to save money.

Plus, you can please everyone around you by practicing a lot and sharing your practice cakes.

The looks of it...
by: Anonymous

How do you get the cake to look professionally frosted/decorated? I know I can't do as good a job as a baker, but I don't see me asking a baker to frost styrofoam and expecting him to actually do it. Otherwise, it's a damn clever idea.

Fake Wedding Cake Variation
by: Anonymous

Hysterical and wonderful! Here's a variation. An elaborate 3,4,5 tiered fake cake with only the top tier real. The bride and groom would just cut from the top. They could also freeze the rest of the top tier for their first anniversary, as some folks do.
