Trend Alert:

Short wedding dresses are in for summer. They can be worn for any type wedding. For a a more formal look just pick fancy fabric and accessories. White dresses are very popular right now which makes it very easy to buy a dress right off the rack in the regular "non-bridal" area. You can also really show off pretty shoes with a short dress.

Hey, y'all!

I'm planning a small-ish wedding for Labor Day weekend next year. Our hope is that our families can use the time to get to know each other. My fiance and I are of different races, so we thought a "wedding weekend" would be perfect for our situation. We are getting married here in my hometown. His family is from a larger city and with my fiance moving to be with me; we thought it would be a great opportunity to inroduce them to my family and our small town's charm all at once. We have a large yard & a pool, so during Labor Day Weekend, that seems like an easy entertaining idea. I'm stalled after that. By the way we are on a tight budget. My question is, do y'all have any great ideas for us to make the most out of the three day event?

Hi Mardi,

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!Your backyard sounds like a nice spot to do some entertaining. I know you can work it out nicely. I'll give you some ideas that I think will help you.

If some arrive on Friday you could have a cocktail party in the evening. Serve drinks (wine and beer or punch) and hors d'oeuvres. Make them yourself. Cheese, crackers, coldcuts, raw veggies and dip would be fine.

On Saturday you could show the family around your town and have a picnic in the park. Just have sandwiches and your usual picnic fare.

After the wedding on Sunday have the reception in the backyard. Dinner buffet style is inexpensive and easy to make yourself. Set up a couple of folding tables by the pool cover with a cloth and serve from there. Food such as baked ziti, salad, good bread and fruit would be ideal. Make a cupcake wedding cake (see our site). They will love this.

If you and they are still there on Monday have a very casual barbecure in the backyard. Hamburgers and hot dogs would be good. Crank up the stereo and play some outdoor games that you think everybody would like.

I hope I've helped you work it out. It may take some work but I'm sure friends and family will be more than willing to help you. Good luck.

Best regards
